Hello all:

I was volunteered to cook Thanksgiving dinner this year due to it being my Mother-in-law's birthday :o) Woohoo!

Can anyone give me any tips on the do's and don'ts of cooking a turkey. I have never cooked one before. (It's a 20 pounder!)

Thank you and I look forward to hearing ideas!

Kristen,

I for one like smoked turkey. I also have heard that "deep fried"turkey is so good, you'll
never want turkey any other way.

I've also had BBQ ribs and steak for Thanksgiving in years past.
I have heard that the deep fried is the way to go!
My late partner always used the recipe in "From Julia Child's Kitchen" which recommends a 20 lb. turkey as ideal for taste, tenderness and leftovers. She says roast 16 to 20 lb. birds for between 4-6 hours and let it rest 30 min. before carving. The oven temp is 325 degrees. Cover with cheesecloth and baste every half hour. A meat thermometer (inserted in the thigh) should read between 180 to 185 when done.
That is really great info. Thank you Susan!
slow cooking/smoking in a big green egg with a simple herb and butter rub.
the only way to go. you can find the process in any of the big green egg forums.
it's fool proof!

Here is something a friend sent to me just today :
Excellent Turkey Recipe just in time for Thanksgiving.....

Here is a turkey recipe that also includes the use of popcorn as a stuffing -- imagine that. When I found this recipe, I thought it was perfect for people like me, who just are not sure how to tell when poultry is thoroughly cooked, but not dried out. Give this a try.
8 - 15 lb. turkey
1 cup melted butter
1 cup stuffing ( Pepperidge Farm is Good.)
1 cup uncooked popcorn (ORVILLE REDENBACHER'S LOW FAT)
Salt/pepper to taste
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Brush turkey well with melted butter, salt, and pepper. Fill cavity with stuffing and popcorn.
Place in baking pan with the neck end toward the back of the oven. Listen for the popping sounds. When the turkey's butt blows the oven door open and the bird flies across the room, it's done.

( Kristen I had to this was just sent by a friend to me today LOL )
That's awesome....thank you :o)

It may be safer to order a

JENNIE-O oven ready turkey!

gOBBLE, gOBBLE

Bill
Thanks - that was hysterically funny!
