FohBoh

Restaurant Social Media

I was wondering, Does anyone out there use employee websites? We're a small regional chain, and I'm looking into creating a website for our employees to use. I'm looking at creating a bulletin board type system, but also allowing them to create myspace/facebook style pages for them to express themselves. My ultimate goal would be to have an online community (like FohBoh) but for our employees to connect and allow us to monitor it. We'd also have training tools available. Anyone doing this now? Did you create it or use a solution off the shelf?

Side note: do you know what your employees are saying about your company on Facebook/Myspace? How many of you check it with frequency? Any tools you use other than just searching?

Sounds like a great idea for building team spirit and for training as well.
Fabulous idea!! Soft selling your training through this site is sure to appeal to Gen Y. Keep us posted as to your progress, I would love to see the end product!!
Hi Jeremy -

Have you thought about creating a community within FohBoh? We have at least 2 other chains currently doing this - in a private group that no one else can access. One of them has about 150 of their employees participating. Contact Erin Shea our community director to ask about a private group.
A few things to ask yourself. Do all of my staff have access to a computer that has internet? Will all my staff want to be monitered while online? If you have even one individual who can not afford internet , or chooses not to have it then the whole idea could be hampered. You might want to encourage your staff to join FohBoh for the time being and see if the solutions that you are looking for can't be found within its system. Best of luck!
I agree with KT and Leslie. Why spend a lot of money creating a website? You can do the same thing using FohBoh, with a lot less aggrevation, trying to 'reinvent the wheel.'

I've looked at a service like this before. www.hotschedules.com does a similar service. Do you have any issues with staff that don't have internet or wireless access? I like the idea of catering to an increasing web-savvy and wireless workforce.
Hot schedules, schedule fly, etc.... all offer GREAT services! I like the fact that if you created a group/private group within FohBoh it would really reinforce a feeling of community among your staff. An engaged and active community = a happy community, and who doesn't love happy emplyees :)
Are you looking for an existing web application to create these accounts or do you plan on hiring someone to build it for you?
There are plenty of free solutions out there. You can create a Facebook group and have your employees join and post discussions.
Uh, yeah you could. But, isn't that the purpose of FohBoh? The community for the restaurant industry? Just start a group.
we've have an employee run wiki up for a little less than a year...

i would invite you to check the results out here - http://www.theaqwiki.com.

i paid about $80 for the server space (for two years) and the software to run the wiki is free. it's the same platform that wikipedia uses and is available from mediawiki.

implementing this software is not for the feint of heart, and the system can not be forced on the employees or nothing will get done. i did the installation and got the site started. thankfully, there are a few employees that help maintain it.

i'd be happy to answer any questions about it...

Looks good. Is this for a single restaurant, a chain, a franchise? I couldn't tell real quick what the restaurant was. Does the wiki software allow for any branding (logos, colors, etc)? Also, I noticed that it was all publicly viewable. Is there a way to change that or add a login of some sort? How did you advertise this was available to your employees?

Thanks for link!
the site is for a single restaurant.

you're not supposed to tell what the restaurant is... just in case someone leaks something - info, rumor, etc. you can make the front-end look however you please, but it will take some work.

i made it publicly viewable for the "technophobes" who didn't want to register (or had a hard time doing so). you can make it a private site.

we had a presentation at dinner lineup to debut it. took a while to get some time/energy put into it from the staff, but it's going well now.

you should check out mediawiki.org for more info. it's all "open source" and while not easy to install, it does mostly take care of itself once it's up and going.
