Hi John
Comment cards are a great thing if you are set up for success,
. Pre shift meeting should be held in your restaurant to insure that great service with the expectation that all comment cards will be great
. Have a comment card contest with your staff, the one with the most, best comment card each shift or night wins. It ups the bar 100% in your restaurant.
. Have plenty of pens or pencils for the guests at each table so it is not a hassle for them to fill the comment card out.
. Truly guest love to tell how great and how poor service things are in your restaurant, They want your restaurant to be great, so they have a place to keep coming back to. So as well as giving it to your server, have the comment card be able to be mailed to your restaurant postage paid for those that want to do it that way. I have a template if you need it.
. Maybe as well as a lock box at the front door for them to put them in, on the way out as our awesome host/hostess are thanking them for coming and making sure they had a great experience.
. Truly the only way to find out what is going on in the minds and heart of our guests, besides talking to everyone of them, which we should be doing as anyway. Comment card could be fun as well as a world of awakening. They always worked for me, and if the GM and managers are out there talking to the guests, making it fun, letting them know you are great, but you even want to be better, so please if there is anything you would like to see different, please let us know. There is nothing wrong with that, truly it will help your restaurant.

I think that Comment Card Contests can skew the results. Servers aren't really going to push for comments from tables that might be critical of them. The people that wind up winning the comment card contests are generally your best servers, and the the ones that lose are generally your most apathetic. I used to make comment card generation part of a servers rating criteria.
