I know there are a ton of ways to get a "job"... what have you found that actually works? For the employers... what works as far as finding the best employees?

Jeannine,

Are you looking for a job or are you looking for the best talent? Either way my advice is network, network, network..... 75% of people choose their next job based on someone they know or recommended the job to them. Employers feel more comfortable hiring someone who comes recommended from someone they know and Job Seekers feel more comfortable accepting a job that's been given the "O.K." from someone they know. I spent 5-6 years as a Recruiter and have recently been looking for a career change. I'm blogging about my experience here if you'd like to follow it I'm sure it will be insightful. Also we recently had a discussion on the group Talent Revolution about attracting talent you should join and check it out.
If I were you, I would hire Amanda Hite as my recruiter......I think she would be an awesome recruiter but if you can't get her try some of these easy steps....

Ask everyone you know where their favorite place to eat and drink, then go there first - there is a reason they go there!

I suggest you go to the places as a guest that you hear about or sound intriguing for what you want to do. Talk to your server, bartender, or the staff and ask them what it is like to work there? If you get positive notes continue the process with an interview/application/resume

Next during your interview ask if you can come see the business operating and "hang out" for a couple of hours in the FOH and BOH to see how it really operates. If the employer won't let you do that....well what do they have to hide?
Two words: Craig's list.

After that, two more words: hope and pray.

Not. But I have had the best success through networking with my own people. Go to employees you really like, and ask them to bring their friends in; because good people tend to hang around other good people. One caveat: do not ask this of employees you don't like so much, because you're most likely to get the same...
I had the absolute worst luck with Craigslist.

Networking is a good idea, as Amanda suggested -- most business owners have a stack of applications from people they didn't hire (and not necessarily for bad reasons) and I've found that people are willing to let other business owners share in the "wealth" -- I've done it for friends who needed an employee or two.

Randy's other idea of asking your current employees is a good one. The two girls who work for me -- I hired the second one "sight unseen" because of the first one's recommendation. And I have absolutely no regrets -- they're both wonderful girls...more like family, really. And all of their friends (the ones I've met) are nice kids, and if I needed more employees, I'd hire any of them in a heartbeat.
Thank you everybody! I really appreciate your answers :)
