Hi there:

Just turning 40 and topping out @ 280.
Due to a series of people I know around me dropping dead (really), I am jumping off my Coke/Soda habit, fast food (I did watch Supersize me) and 4-cup reese peanut butter cup diet.

I need to get a blender for making smoothies. I do not need the industrial ones @ Jamba Juice or smoothie bars, but really good home kitchen version.

I used to work at a 5 star hotel in Seattle, and one guy would drink one really large 40-60oz container of fruit smoothies a night. He would make so much, that a lot of us on the line would have a 15oz cup ourselves. (Yes, he would raid the garde manager of all the wonderful fruit..talk about shrinkage!) But even the Chef would have a glass!

What do you use for blenders at home?

As an ex-juice bar owner, we blend with Blendtec. There's nothing else like 'em!
Hilarious. I first became aware of these because of the youtube iphone blender video. Horrible waste of an iphone! I will look closer at these. Thanks for the pointer!
I have an old Oster that refuses to give up. At home I use a Braun immersion blender for smoothies. The Blendtecs are excellent -- I'm looking around now for a pair of used ones.
I can't live without my Cuisinart blender for my protein shakes in the morning. Sleek and shiny, stainless steel. Nothing is hotter in my kitchen!
Hello -
Blendtec, Vitamix, and Hamilton-Beach are the top choices, in that order.
Commercial smoothie blenders are specifically programmed to create fine ice particles which contribute to the smooth and creamy texture of the drink. The blades are different and the RPM of the machines are specifically controlled to not heat the drink and cause melting.

Home units will leave the ice very chunky and contribute to a thin and water texture.
