Taking a cue from the Pizza Lovers group, I thought I'd ask this question. When I travel, I prefer to eat where the locals go, and most times I'm looking for something cheap...with good service.

Some constraints:

1. No chains
2. Two people should be able to eat a meal for less than $40

Have fun!

"Biff Burgers & Buffy's" - 3939 49th St. N St. Petersburg FL

The prices range from $.99 to $3.20...I have eaten here and they have some of the best cheap burgers around, tater tots are available and they cook them to perfection, pulled pork, BBQ, ribs, milk shakes, etc. It is open air, televisions everywhere with every sporting event happening...very long bar..and pretty decent service.
River's End Restaurant and Relia's Garden, right here at the Nantahala Outdoor Center

In Bryson City, Jimmy Mac's, Pasqualino's, The Everett Street Diner and Guyabitos
In Sylva, Bogart's, Lulu's

Cheers!
I am suddenly hungry for BBQ and burgers.

Thanks guys, for adding to the discussion -- keep those great suggestions coming!
Palm Springs can be, way too often, just too hot to cook at home. So we have a lot of local favorites.
Thai Smile gets the 'best of the valley' nearly every year, Look restaurant's patio is great on a warm summer night, Amici's in Rancho Mirage has great daily specials on regional Italian classics. Uptown Grill has a summer 'two-for-one' summer deal that pulls the locals in. La Crepe, Oceans, Zin, Kaisers also do 'specials that qualify for your category. I'm sure there are are many more. But that should take care of a weekend visit. LOL
Just north of Seattle is the quaint little waterfront town of Mukilteo. And in this town is an incredible tiny one man operation restaurant call The Grumpy Chef. The review below found on Trip Advisor describes this place perfectly. Chef Masumoto is serious and doesn't smile allot but you will not find this quality of food any where for anything close to his price!

The Review
My husband and I visit this place from 1-3 times a week! We've tried everything on his menu (now we try to order daily special each time for new surprise if they are still available ) As one of the fans of Chef Masumoto, I think I should step up and say something although my written English is not good either. Go somewhere to spend $50 if you would like to have a 5 stars service with fine food!

Where else could you get seared mahi mahi with a mango-jalapeno sauce, grilled risotto cake and steamed green beans over marinated tomatoes with a salad of mixed greens dressed with a horseradish vinaigrette for $9.25, soft drink, soup and tax included? What about seared Ahi-tuna with cream-whipped potatoes, salad of mixed greens dressed with citrus vinaigrette and a side of fresh fruit (soft drink and soup included) for $8.99? We went to Ivar's once and ordered seared Ahi-Tuna for appetizer which cost us $9 for 4 tiny thin pieces. Did I mention Chef Masumoto doesn't accept tipping? I personally witnessed once he ran after 2 customers to return the tips they put on table and said thank you to them.

Don't just take my words. If you type "Grouchy Chef" on Google, you will find tons of positive reviews of this restaurant. I can say it's your lost if you stopped by the Mukilteo area without visiting the Grouchy Chef. I LOVE the GROUCHY CHEF!!!
That's awesome....if the name wasn't already taken, I'd totally rename my place "THE GROUCHY BARISTA". Anyone who knows me well wouldn't blink an eye... :)

That sounds like a fantastic place -- and no tipping?? Even better. The mahi-mahi sounds divine.
Fast Eddie's sounds terrific. OMG pork kabobs?? I'm in heaven.
The marinated tenderloin on a stick sounds great, too. Frankly, anything on a stick sounds good right about now. Our weather is starting to warm up just a bit, so I have BBQ on the brain.
Sushi En at Polaris in Columbus, OH!

A spicy dragon roll and 6 pieces of Unagi with Sapporo for two and a tip gets you right on $40

Call me when you are in town and I will go dutch!
Baton Rouge, LA - Sammy's Grill. 8635 Highland Road, (225) 766-9600. Great food across the board; lively atmosphere, easy to get to...and the best crawfish in town!
I am sad to say...I've never tasted crawfish. I remember catching them in the creek when I was a kid, but I couldn't imagine eating one. (Lobster yes, crawfish no.)

Explain how they taste -- do they taste like lobster even a little bit?
I used to catch what we called "crayfish" when I was a kid as well. These aren't the same, they're actually farmed and seasonal. As far as taste, hmmm, they're cooked with a lot of spice so that's most of the flavor and the texture is probably most similar to shrimp. If you like spicy food, these would fit right in.
