$40 / lb. Wild Salmon – I’m feeling faint!

I got a distressing call this morning from my fish distributor. He said with the closure of the salmon fisheries in California & Oregon and a severely limited fishery in Washington combined with a estimated 40% reduction in the normal catch in Alaska we would see a a huge increase in the price of salmon!

How huge, I asked? “Well, you’re probably not going to like it but we’re almost out of the ’07 fish and the pricing that I am seeing right now is around $40."

When I woke up a little later and pulled myself off the floor I had a sudden epiphany. At $34/lb, Lobster's going to seem like a steal!

Who would have thought?

Oh yeah. Very true. Actually the streams are still open, you just cannot fish in the ocean. (From my friend who is a guide on the Columbia River)

It really makes for the people who have boats or go with guides bonus out for the $$ they spend for going out!
As we are all painfully aware, the dramatic increases in Fuel and the pursuit of Bio-Fuel Alternatives continues to force transportation/ingredients costs higher and higher. No Food Producer is insulated from these current trends. The only option available to Manufacturers is to pass along those costs to the Retailers and in turn the end user...the Consumer.
"Sustainable" practices really aren't that sustainable. When you shut down mass production and choke off the supply, the price has to go up. It's inevitable.
so has anyone seen the higher prices yet? steve do you buy whole unfileted salmon?
