FDA Inspectors & Health Officials Sent into Restaurants!

This just in...

FARGO, N.D. (AP) - About 120 tons of recalled beef that was supposed to go to area school lunch programs and were destined to end up in a Fargo landfill instead, have been exchanged with beef headed into chain restaurants across North Dakota and parts of South Dakota.

As a result, the state Health Department of North Dakota asked the FDA for help in visiting State Restaurants to find the tainted beef before it can be served in restaurants that utilize band saws to cut their own steaks and/or grind their own hamburger.

Fargo's solid waste utility manager, Terry Ludlum, said the frozen beef was delivered in 40-pound boxes by multiple vendors across North Dakota.

"We have identified a food service warehouse in Fargo as the place of the inadvertant beef exchange, Ludlum said. "The beef was contaminated with metal shavings, and we are hoping to recover the tainted beef before it is processed and served in restaurants."

FDA inspectors and State Health Officials are now visiting every restaurant in North Dakota, searching for the missing 40 pound boxes. They hope to complete their search by Wednesday. Restaurant Operators are advised not to open suspect boxes delivered on March 26th or 27th, and to call their local health departments to verify lot numbers.

Da-DAA-Dum!
Actually, it's not uncommon for raw ground beef that's been recalled, to go to a cooking facility (at bargain basement prices of course) and turned into cooked patties etc. If it's E Coli 0157H7, that is.
Safe and legal.
In this case though, because 'downer cattle' were involved, (hence a perceived risk of BSE, which the prions do not go away with cooking) is an exception. I believe the recalled product in this case was ordered to be denatured and disposed of.
By the way, in my opinion, this recall was a bit of overkill.
Obviously, this slaughtehouse was not following its own guidelines with regards to humane handling, and more importantly, Federal guidelines for downer cattle (which are not allowed into the food chain).

The Feds are acting with an abundance of caution, and a triple dose of ass covering.
The more I hear about these sorts of mistakes and oversights the more I lean to the other meats. I probably will see those eventually falling into the same situations as the beef so maybe it is time to just find the local grower and try to avoid the mass production meats whenever possible.
I sure do like bison, and we have a trout farm nearby they do a great job and it is always fresh.
All in all tho that darn beef is starting to scare me just a wee bit.

Our beef is safe. Just a bad apple.
If you go to a local butcher, make sure they are USDA inspected.

I often wondered why a large food chain, would own the largest worm hatchery in world.....
