FARGO, N.D. (AP) - About 120 tons of recalled beef that was supposed to go to area school lunch programs and were destined to end up in a Fargo landfill instead, have been exchanged with beef headed into chain restaurants across North Dakota and parts of South Dakota.
As a result, the state Health Department of North Dakota asked the FDA for help in visiting State Restaurants to find the tainted beef before it can be served in restaurants that utilize band saws to cut their own steaks and/or grind their own hamburger.
Fargo's solid waste utility manager, Terry Ludlum, said the frozen beef was delivered in 40-pound boxes by multiple vendors across North Dakota.
"We have identified a food service warehouse in Fargo as the place of the inadvertant beef exchange, Ludlum said. "The beef was contaminated with metal shavings, and we are hoping to recover the tainted beef before it is processed and served in restaurants."
FDA inspectors and State Health Officials are now visiting every restaurant in North Dakota, searching for the missing 40 pound boxes. They hope to complete their search by Wednesday. Restaurant Operators are advised not to open suspect boxes delivered on March 26th or 27th, and to call their local health departments to verify lot numbers.
